Topic: My headphones

Hi Experts,

It seems I can't go long without an itch to further reduce my bank account in pursuit of digital piano accoutrements.

The headphones I have are the Audio-Technica ATH-M20x.

I know these are not super pro headphones.  But... neither am I a super pro pianist.  I am just playing intermediate level blues/funk/jazz, often with backing tracks.

As another data point, I am perfectly happy with a single "acoustic" piano, the K2, with factory presets.  I don't think I can discern all the subtleties you finer pianists and audiophiles can.

I'm hoping the consensus is that for my application, my headphones are good enough, and instead of spending time writing about and dreaming of fancier headphones, i should just buckle down and practice the darn keyboard.

Or... if I significantly upgrade, will it be a revelation?

Re: My headphones

A more significant upgrade would be some very good speakers.

Hard work and guts!

Re: My headphones

Hum... this time I would disagree. Apples and oranges. ;-)

Thanks Evil.

I have Sony HS7 studio monitors, and a KRK subwoofer.  Good enough, right?   Hope so, cause this rig was expensive.

But I rarely use them, cuz they don't sound as good* as headphones, and more importantly, they disturb the family when I play at night.

*I haven't really tried to optimize them cause I only use them for jam sessions.

Re: My headphones

So... if you have an opportunity, try other models, maybe not a "closed" design: semi-open (or open) are often much better for not much more money - because it's less difficult to achieve. For example, the Superlux (what's in a name !!!) HD 668B. Just my 2 cents.
PS: I'm using a lot of different headphones, including some expensive ones like my Ultrasone Pro 900 for example. And those ones ARE better for sure. But A LOT more expensive... is the price difference worth it? Up to you.

Re: My headphones

On that sort of budget I'd recommend Superlux HD668B (as already mentioned):

These are semi-open headphones though. If you need closed ones (so others around you cannot hear), maybe these:

But I have experience only with the former. I can vouch for them as being excellent for the money. You will want to get more comfy earmuffs for it though in the long run. The vinyl ones they come with get sweaty after a while. Maybe these (??):
