Topic: Kawai VPC 1

Hi! Here is my best Velocitycurve for the fantastic KAWAI VPC 1. My favourite Sound is the Blüthner Model One. Value-Dynamic 40, Value Mint to Condition 45. Have fun! Use the Kawai VPC 1 Velocity-Preset 3 (F#4)

Re: Kawai VPC 1

Dare I even attempt to suggest this???
Do I have such audacity???
Well, in short, yes!!!

A new velocity curve for the VPC1!!!

I anticipate a tirade of sorts, but am willing to run the gauntlet!!!

To the chase. Having had and enjoyed this 88 note wonder for a few months now, and having become more than a little inquisitive regarding the custom PianoTEQ curve, I decided to have a more serious look at the VPC1 Editing Software's Custom Velocity Curve Generator. After quite a number of attempts, I realised there was a simple basic shape that appeared to remain comstant with each try. And it is is so, so very simple that it only requires a single control point!!!

Shall I tell??? ; )

OK,

Velocity = [0, 75, 127; 0, 37, 127]

It can be used at keyboard or software stage and the simplest is just to paste...

Velocity = [0, 75, 127; 0, 37, 127]

...into the PianoTEQ velocity graph, or simply add a control point at 75; 37

Note: Whichever curve you wish to adjust (keyboard's or PianoTEQ's), make sure the other curve is set linear/normal. In other words, if you alter the keyboard's curve, set PianoTEQ's llinear, and vice versa.

Let me know what you think,

Kindest Regards,

Chris

Re: Kawai VPC 1

Hi,

I've just bought a Kawai VPC and I am a bit lost between the curve (fine tuned for pianoteq) set in the VPC keyboard by the VPC Editor and the velocity curve you can define in pianoteq (I am using v4) standalone software.

Do you need to set both or only one either in VPC keyboard or in Pianoteq standalone ?

Is VPC keyboard curve and Pianoteq velocity curve the same concept ?

Thanks for your help !

Kind regards for Switzerland
Philippe

Re: Kawai VPC 1

Set the Normal curve in the Pianoteq GUI when using an Editor curve. And the other way round.

They're exactly the same idea. You should be able to pull the values from the VPC1 curve for Pianoteq, copy them into Pianoteq's Velocity utility, turn VPC Editor off, and keep it off ever after. The correction effect will be identical.

Hi Chris - what kind of repeat speed (single note trills) are you getting from your VPC-1 controller?

Lanny

Re: Kawai VPC 1

Hi Lanny

Further to my email response and for the benefit of other VPC1 owners/would be owners, I would like answer your question regarding trills on a single note.

I have been looking at this today and find that the bounce back speed of the keys is excellent - very fast.

You DO have to allow the key back fully before replaying it otherwise the volume decreases too much.

It is important to get the timing right, but I guess that would be the same with any hammer action piano/keyboard seeing that one is dealing with hammer travel/position and action movements etc..

That said, I have been practicing that infamous extract from Gershwin because it is a good exercise on this subject and am getting some nice results. More practice after this e-mail. I hope to post a demo midi file.

Hope this helps,

Kindest Regards,

Chris

01) Velocity = [0, 21, 38, 59, 80, 100, 118, 127; 0, 14, 29, 48, 67, 90, 116, 127]

or

02) Velocity = [0, 3, 121, 127; 0, 0, 127, 127]

PS:better use Kawai "Normal curve" in VPC1 + 01 or 02 in Pianoteq 5

Re: Kawai VPC 1

Analogus, yes, I liked the curve, too. VPCEditor updated to version 1.3. Among the default curves appeared to curve MP11. But it was limited in fortissimo (no more than 114). I liked it in conjunction with VPC1. I corrected region fortissimo to a value of 127. The positive features of this curve: a good predictability, contrast, large depth to pianissimo, a sense of "key weight", matching sensations and the resulting sound. From negative - perhaps too easy, bright, complex in pianissimo. In opposition, the default curve for Pianoteq I find a little cotton, slowing down. Perhaps the true curve for combinations Pianoteq-VPC1 is somewhere ..in some places closer to the version the default curve Pianoteq, in some - option for MP11. But, nevertheless, this curve is the most attractive for me so far. It inspires to exercise skills, not to search for the best settings. Judging by the news, the curve for VPC1 created in collaboration with Modartt was created during version ~4.5. Perhaps since models were established some improvements that can be disclosed to a greater extent by using more correct velocity curve. I would ask Modartt - Kawai clarify the rate curve for default VPC1 (for VPCEditor).

Re: Kawai VPC 1

I have recently managed to get my VPC1 working again after the supplied power pack / AC/DC adapter blew. I am currently using a Casio Privia power pack / AC/DC adapter that works perfectly and is better quality.

Anyhow, the reason for my post is this. I have found that the most even velocity response is obtained by using the curve which lights the power button solid orange on the VPC1. I forget offhand which VST instrument this curve was custom designed for, but it isn't Pianoteq! Pianoteq's custom curve lights the power button solid green.

Since realising that that velocity response is much tighter using the 'solid orange' curve, I have been working on the Pianoteq velocity curve to achieve a pleasing piano curve. I shall post an .fxp to the file area soon. I have managed to get the VPC1 to sound much better this way.

Do note that there has had to be quite a drastic change to the default Pianoteq curve (in Pianoteq velocity curve pane) but early results prove positive.

I'll return shortly.

Kindest Regards,

Chris

Re: Kawai VPC 1

?? Missing question about curves ..Sorry that did not respond immediately. The sensitivity of the keyboard, or the speed of initially processed VPCEditor, and then in Pianoteq. Works looks like curves in Photoshop. Do you press (input), and they change in accordance with a predetermined curve. VPC1 in its memory stores settings of five curves, and they can be used without turning on VPCEditor. You can switch between them by pressing the power button and one of the top five black keys. If you enable the curve to curve in VPC1 + Pianoteq they will operate simultaneously. But one and the same curve is used only in the editor or only Pianoteq will give the same result.
