This is based on an original string quartet I wrote to remember a good mate. Here it is arranged to a variety of Pianoteq instruments and adds a drum track.

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

"Misty" jazz standard piece in C major performed by Lukáš Zapletal. Piano is Roland FP-30 and the sound is of course pure PianoTeq 6 virtual instrument (trial/demo version with nag screen and few notes silenced) running on Fedora Linux 26 (thanks for Linux support, yay!). Completely recorded in the standalone version.

I started an year ago with piano, this is very simplified version in bad tempo. Also my very first jazz piece, so my expression is perhaps completely wrong. And I misspelled Erroll Garner in the titles embedded in the video, apologies.

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

Hi All,
Just discovered Pianoteq and this user forum. Very impressed with the creativity and skill and glad to be part of the community. I was starting to write a piece with the MKI Rain Stick voice, which I found very intriguing. But I realized I'm not going to have the time to finish it (maybe next year). So here's a short piece I wrote a while back. Good luck everyone, I look forward to listening to all of your entries.

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

My version of the beautiful swedish folk song, ”Who can sail without wind”. Playing first the melody and then my 4 variations, modified Bluethner, Ptq 6.0.1. Take into account when listening, that I tried to get a sound like an old Grand Bluethner I once heard, a bit out of tune, much used, room had bad acustics. As I remember, when a friend was playing and I enjoying with my head just under the lid. That was the first time I got really impressed with the resonance of the strings, soundboard and cabinet, and how they together influence/affect the sound. Because of this, my sound probably is different from  the other contestants. As we know, there is no ”one right” sound, nevertheless, I hope you find something interesting and like my entry. Only trying to be inventive with Ptq in a different way.

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

@Pianoteqenthusiast

Very nice variations and a calm, soothing song.

I might add also that after seeing many swedish-based series (such as the Wallanders) on television, I find the countryside looks a lot like Québec's in places, with a lot more seashore of course!

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

Thank you, Gilles, for your nice words. I am so touched.

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

Such a pleasant series of variations! What did you do to alter the basic Bluethner sound? Whatever you did, it greatly enhanced the rendition.

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

Quite nice!  Just shows me that I really need to split my brain function in two so that I can get my left hand to do things quite independently of my right.  Good for Take Five, good for Tangos, and good for any Ray Manzarek tunes from The Doors ("Gee, guys, your keyboardist is fantastic with all his complex tunes...and the bassist is great as well -- Oh, wait a second, the bassist is just the keyboardist's left hand?!").

Beautiful music and video ! Surely proves pianoteq is a great tool for serious contemporary music. At my age, 1974 is still contemporary...

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

@Larry Ayers

Thank you, Larry Ayers, for your kind words. I did so many things to the Bluethner sound so I think this is not the right place to describe it. Maybe after the contest.

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

Many nice videos around...

I have a question. Can a formal friendly video response offensive somehow to the creator of the main video ?

I was imagining that a video repsonse to the great video Hugh Sung created years ago about Pianoteq, could be usefull. The response video appears as a link bellow the original vieo, am I right or that had changed in yputube rules ?

As far as I remamber many people had requested High SUng to record a update of his video, using pianoteq 5 (and pianoteq 6 now). This would be perfect to give a idea of pianoteq evolution.

Hello
Here is my participation in "Pianoteq Video Contest 2017" resolutely in a contemporary and microtonal aesthetic. The composition was written with Opusmodus and played in Ableton Live with six instances of Pianoteq (modified TubularBells, modified ConcertArp recording, Steinway D Classical Recording A, modified Celesta, modified Cinbalom, modified original ChurchBells, Steinway D Classical Recording BA) and completed with a Ircam Solo Instruments bank instance (flute, Horn, Cello) read via the UVI Workstation The microtonal frequencies are created in Opusmodus with a programmation that adjusts midicents.
A video playback in HD and listening to headphones is recommended.

Interesting work. I didn't know about Opusmodus and it seems quite powerful for algorithmic composition, a subject I'm interested in. I'll look further into it, thanks!

Super!  What piano voice did you use?  I see you have the velocity curve pulled down a bit in the bass, and the harmonics adjusted as well.  Your performance really does justice to Pianoteq.  I'm declaring you a winner already.

Thank you very much, It's very kind of you. About velocity curve - I'm using this one, because of dynamic precision it gives me. I used to play analogue pianos and now, when I play mostly on my VPC1 this velocity, in my opinion, is the best. There are built velocity curves inside VPC1, but they are little bit over combined to my taste of analogue touch (even the one dedicated to Pianoteq).
About piano voice - as you can see on my YT movie - it's Steinway model D Chamber Recording - I used it to give some breath to the sound.

Best regards to you and all other contestant of the 2017 competition.

Dear Pianoteq Forum,

so as a long time MIDI guitarist who has just discovered Pianoteq 6 a few days ago and being totally blown away, I step into the "lions den" of piano players and dare to present my first piece of Pianoteq work played on a Frameworks classical MIDI guitar -  built by Frank Krocker in Germany - through a Roland GI 20 GK-MIDI Interface.
I hope you like it - but anyway I am very grateful to have discovered a truly playable modeled instrument and this great forum at last.

All the best to all the participants and thanks a lot for the great inspiration!

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

Beautiful piece and great playing! So strange to see a guitar and hear a piano...usually it's the other way around, playing a keyboard and hearing a harp for instance.

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

This is the first time I've entered the competition, and it's a piece of my own called Pulse Vortex 122. The piece has quite a slow start, but please listen through to the end -- I'd like some feedback about whether you think the rhythmic section towards the end works or not.

I've just listened through to almost all of last year's entries, and am currently working through this year's. I'm in awe at some of the wonderful pieces I'm hearing. Good luck to everyone!

Hello Eddie, it's very nice but I think you must play with less curve velocity, for me you want to hear guitar with a piano sound and not a piano playing with a guitar. I say that but it's a really nice tune.

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

Dear Gilles,
thanks a lot for the compliment - it is the first time that I played only the VI sound without the guitar sound mixed with it and I dared to do that because Pianoteq 6 has such a great sound and playability.

@GRB
Thanks so much - this is the first time since 1994 in my MIDI guitar experience that I thought it to be tasteful enough to use just the VI sound without the guitar pickup sound and I will experiment further on that with the pianos and the vibraphones.

@Lylo
Glad that you basically seemed to like it, but unfortunately I don't really know what your proposed improvement is supposed to mean.
Si tu veut, tu peut le dire encore une fois en francais mais mercy beaucoup pour le compliment.

The sound is a little bit hard, a pianist don't play with so "attack", try with the curve preset "moderatly fast keyboard" or "fast keyborad" you will understand what I mean.
But you know, it's a difficult part of a piano vsti, the good tweaking of the velocity curve, some pianists aren't use the goods features.
Sorry for my small english (and thanks Google translate for is help).

Re: PIANOTEQ VIDEO CONTEST 2017 - ENTRIES

This is my entry with the last part of Beethoven's Choral Fantasy.

I performed this piece with 2 Pianoteq instruments, the Streicher piano (on the left) and the Ruckers harpsichord as vocals (on the right), as well as my self-made orchestra recording. The diapason is set to 432 Hz in order to make the performance closer to Beethoven's period.

Both the Pianoteq instruments have been adjusted note-by-note to obtain more inequality and realism. They also have their own microphone settings (instead of the Player 2 setting shown on the Pinaoteq screen) each with at least 2 pairs of mics.

The Ruckers harpsichord is used as the soli and chorus. With 7 different register combinations, it can simulate different parts of the vocals.

The orchestra sounds and recording are made by myself. The strings are non-vibrato with warm and silky timbre. The woodwinds and brass mostly originate from period instruments, which are more similar to what Beethoven could hear (if he weren't deaf).

Hope you'll enjoy this entry
