Re: Modified VPC1 Controller for $5800

I had to chuckle regarding the Ravenworks ad, wherein they use a proprietary Bismuth key weighing scheme.

Why chuckle?  That's because Bismuth is element number 83 and Lead is element number 82 in the periodic chart of the elements.  It seems they swapped Bismuth for Lead -- and made a big deal of it!  Of course, the manufacturer will say that bismuth is "safe" because it is the "bis" part of antacid "Peptobismol", and that Bismuth Chloride makes up much of the pigment in ladies' red eye shadow.  Apparently lead = bad, and therefore bismuth = good by default.

On the subject of "ivory feel", as pushed by other keyboard manufacturers, is anyone aware that the use of ivory has been banned in piano keyboards since about 1950, long before most of us were even born?  I would venture to state that a good portion (or course, though, not all) of Pianoteq forum members have never even touched a piano with ivory keys, unless the said item was at least 67 years old.

Enough of my rambling; <gets off soap box>

Cheers,

Joe

I confess I wouldn't have the knowledge to tell the feel of that from a "basic" VPC1, but my first reaction was that it's a bit cheeky asking someone to pay for the pleasure of advertising their company.

What's the difference between the model I and this model II apart from the (hideous) blue color and the price ?  Am I missing something ?

And for $5,800 a place to mount the inevitable heavyweight laptop would have seemed reasonable to expect !  Not that makers generally seem to feel the need to make allowances for one.

I know this is an old thread, but I've just been doing some digging on the 'modified' VPC1 by Ravensworks. I'm not sure if they are still doing these mods, but it looks like they completely regulate the action and upgrade the materials, optimising the key dip and friction points. They also spray it a different colour!!

I'm temped to buy a VPC1 and do some of these mods myself (or get my Dad to do them, who used to be a piano technician!)
