Topic: MPiano - Concept Controller

They claim this can simulate different keyboard actions (piano, organ, etc) Certainly won't be cheap though.

Re: MPiano - Concept Controller

It's easy to talk, and difficult to make.

Adjustable weight it's not enough, and not even close, to alternate between the touch feeling of pianos, harpsichords, organs, electric keyboards etc...

There is one real piano with real action, and adjustable (somehow) weight. Some Petrof pianos use magnets for this, not only to change the key feeling of weight (magnetic balanced action), but also for accelerate the piano actions (mechanism) response (magnetic accelerated action).

Wow - thanks for sharing this. This kind of idea pops up every now and then "blue-sky" idea chatter - it would be amazing to see it be realised!

Re: MPiano - Concept Controller

As someone who believes quite STRONGLY in the power of modeling... and many/most us here DO

It should be simple enough to provide a set of levers on pivots with any number of resistance profiles in order to simulate the resistance profiles of different instruments/mechanisms.

Magnet, coil, current -> resistance
For some instruments (e.g. piano) the profile would need to change as a function of key speed.

Profile the instrument to be modeled, derive resistance curve, etc.

I wouldn't get TOO hung up on traditional mechanical implementations, inputs and outputs are what matter - tactile feedback being part of the loop.

Re: MPiano - Concept Controller

I was thinking about something like this for a while... as mentioned above, certainly wouldn't be cheap to manufacture though.

Re: MPiano - Concept Controller

This keyboard is now on Kickstarter.

They seemed to have changed the key action technology. Before they were talking about it having a variable key resistance being controlled by configurable actuators. Now they mention "Shape Memory Alloy Key Springs".

Anyways, it's 8,000 euros, in case your piggy bank is bursting at the seams.
