I am wondering if there is an explanation of some of the preset names associated with the D4 piano.

For example: D4 Trio and D4 Duo ... What is the significance of those names ? It would be nice if there was an explanation of what sound the preset was representing.

Sound, dependent on equipment and adjustment

Hi - I found here many happy people - and some very harsh critics.

For me ALL this critisism is not very helpful, when equipment and adjustment oft this equipment, and even adjustment of pianoteq, is not mentioned. For me, this point of right adjustment is not easy to handle.

Using AKG phones direktly on my EMU 1616m, I first heard the nice and natural piano sound.
My even expensive transmissionline speakers gave a very dull sound - artificial, not piano like.

The headphone experience showed very well, where the mistake was. It was a very hard work, to adjust speakers in the room, amp, subwoofer that it sounds similar to a piano IN THIS SPECIAL ROOM. On one hand, speakers are never a piano - but one can do a lot - right or wrong way! A common mistake is f.e., that the subwoofer is adjusted too loud. In this case an upgrade, giving more bass and "fullness" - will sound very unnatural compared to a bright smaller sound. This is only one example, how an improvement can make it more worse to some people.

At the first time I heard Pianoteq on a CD from a music test magazine. They tried to be ABSOLUTELY objective. They made ONE midi file and tested all the virtual instruments. Pianoteq sounds VERY artificial. Later I came to the homepage of Pianoteq, heard some examples with my headphones and liked it much. By this, I learned, that you have to play an instrument - live with it - that a maschine-like test with a midi file played on another instrument is a mistake and even not objective.

After buying it, I had this hard difference between headphone sound and speakers and had some hard work to like it again. I think, even a real piano you can make sound bad by giving it a wrong place and a bad sounding room.

For me, adjustment is much more a critical point than how Pianoteq sounds by itself - this I can get directly behind D.A. of my interface by studio-headphones and is always a little bit better than speakers and room.

greets George

D4 Tuning

I just upgraded my Pianoteq 3 PLAY for the Pianoteq 4 STAGE version last week and am still acclimatizing myself to the new model D4. The dynamics appear to me to be much improved and the bass and tenor is richer without being muddy like the former C3 model. However ...

Am I the only one to find the tuning to be perhaps a little off? I actually think I prefer it this way ("character"), but there does seem to be something not quite "perfect" about the tuning. In particular, if one tries out high treble octaves they do not seem to be "perfectly" tuned. And if one adds these higher octaves to very low bass octaves, the discrepancy appears even more pronounced. Is this just me, or is it perhaps that the D4 reference model (like the Pleyel) was modeled "as is"? Or is it that some different kind of scale design was used?

Like I said, this is probably just my adapting to the new model and/or my ear beginning to go awry, but I would welcome other people's impressions.

S.

The Impossible Dream

Do you ever wonder if the folks at Pianoteq are selling a dream ?

They have produced a product that allows the user to make almost an infinite number of modifications to the sound that gets produced with "the dream" of creating a sound just the way we want it but, in fact, there is no combination of modifications that will ever get the sound that we want.

I think of this because with all of the presets that they have provided, surely these are the best sounds that Pianoteq engineers have been able to come up with. What makes us think that we can do "better" ?

In fairness, some of those sounds are pretty good and I use them with almost trivial modifications as a layer with my Kawai CA63 internal sound. I have never found a sound within Pianoteq that I would use by itself. In fact, I use the Pianoteq sounds almost as a personal justification for having purchased it.

Now, don't get me wrong ... I am not accusing Pianoteq of doing this intentionally. I believe they are doing their best to create a product that will give us a sound that we like. It is just a very difficult task and one that may never be accomplished.

Well, that should be enough to get the juices flowing .... Anyone else care to weigh in on this ?

I'm currently using Bose Companion 5 2.1-CH PC speakers connected to my laptop via USB. It sounds ok but I am wondering whether I'll get a better sound using studio monitors or hi-fi speakers powered by an external amp or even some other setup that I am unfamiliar with.

What do you guys think works best, what are the advantages and disadvantages of various setups? I also want to listen to my CDs via the same sound system and perhaps even do a bit of mixing. What setup are you using and does it work well for you or do you wish you had something else?

K1 in v4 impressions?

I mentioned this briefly in my Norah Jones thread, but thought it was worthy of its own thread:

I have PianoTeq Play 3 and use the K1 piano religiously. Having tried the PianoTeq v4 demo, the D4 grand sounds nowhere near as good as the K1 to my ears. I love PianoTeq so much and got so much value out of my Play license, that I would love to support further development and upgrade. Which leads me to my question:

Does the K1 sound better with the v4 engine, as compared to v3? Audio samples, anyone?

Thank you, and have a great weekend!

PT4 Welcome window problem – Linux

Have an HP Pavilion dv9000 laptop running Kubuntu linux 8.04 (Hardy Heron) in i386 mode.

When I launch PT4 the welcome window pops up with its widgets dead. It blocks almost the entire PT4 GUI and thus prevents access to most of the PT4 controls. Any subsequent windows or drop down menus are also zombies and clutter the desktop. Meanwhile the piano works fine – I just can't change anything. Clicking the exit button shuts down PT4 properly and returns the desktop to normal.

Kubuntu 8.04 is a bit dated and may be the source of the problem. My desktop PC is currently running Linux Mint 12 (based on Ubuntu 12.04, the latest stable version). I plan to install that OS on the laptop to see if that makes PT4 happy. Will post any new developments.

In the meantime PT3 still runs fine so that I am not actually adrift.
